The Right Thing to Do
To combat the unseen environmental impacts of vehicle emissions and the visible resulting smog that hung over large US cities, the EPA created federal regulations to battle pollution. Our state took the lead, enacting laws in 1984 that predated the currently enforced 1996 federal mandates. Therefore, most vehicles are subject to smog test regulations. It’s the law, but it’s also the right thing to do to preserve our environment. When it’s time for your vehicle’s smog check, count on the ASE Master-certified technicians at Wimmer’s Automotive in Morro Bay, California. Information You Need
Overseen by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), the smog check evaluates the condition and function of your vehicle as related to emissions. The specifics of what your automobile requires depend upon the year model and type. Based on that, our experienced technicians may perform the following: emissions/exhaust visual check; check engine light, exhaust gas recirculation system, fuel evaporative system, ignition timing, and gas cap assessment; on-board diagnostic (OBD) system function review; and tailpipe emissions testing. If your vehicle was manufactured in or since 1976 and is powered by gasoline, hybrid sources, or alternative fuel, it is subject to the smog check unless it is newer than eight model years old under your ownership or newer than 4 model years old at change of ownership. Diesel powered transportation manufactured in or since the 1998 model year and weighing 14,000 GVW or less also requires a smog check. There are no year model exceptions for diesels. To help you keep track, when you receive your registration renewal card in the mail, it will indicate if your vehicle needs a smog check. If you sell your vehicle, it is your responsibility to have the check performed and provide proof of compliance to the buyer.
