Morro Bay High School Automotive Students Spring into Action, Contain Fire Near Campus

Morro Bay, CA – 8/29/25 – Advanced Automotive Technology students at Morro Bay High School demonstrated quick thinking and real-world application of their training this morning when they spotted smoke and flames in the brush behind the auto shop during their 3rd period class.

The students, who receive regular instruction on fire safety by their instructor Mr. Wimmer—including the use and location of extinguishers and fire blankets—acted immediately to evaluate the situation. The students quickly gathered the shop’s 5 fire extinguishers and assisted Mr. Wimmer in suppressing the flames before they could ignite nearby large trees and brush.

“Our training paid off today,” said instructor Ritchie Wimmer, who leads the Automotive Technology program. “We prepare students not only for careers in the automotive industry, but also how to think critically and respond safely in unexpected real-world situations. I’m extremely proud of their teamwork, calm decision-making, and courage.”

The quick response helped prevent what could have been a much larger and more dangerous fire. Morro Bay Fire Department responded quickly and commended the students for their swift actions that minimized the risk to the school and surrounding community.

The incident highlights the value of career technical education programs like Automotive Technology, which combine hands-on learning with essential safety training.
